Writing your “about me” web page can seem like a total waste of time considering many people do not read the “about me” web page. But when used correctly, it can become a wonderful sales and marketing tool.
It’s Not About You
Believe it or not, the “about me” (or “about us”) web page isn’t about you. It’s about what your experience and expertise can do for the potential client or what your product can do for the potential customer.
It’s About Your Customers
Human beings are self-centered by nature. When purchasing products and/or services, they don’t think, “How will my business help your business?” they think, “How will your business make my life easier? How will your business make my business more productive? How will your product or service improve my quality of life?” In other words, they want to know, “What’s in it for me?”
Answer Potential Questions
You can answer those questions by writing an “about me” web page that is customer-focused, that demonstrates the strengths you, your staff, your company, and/or your product bring to the table, and that highlights important key facts.
Know Your Purpose
“About me” web pages vary according to the types of business you run, so make sure your “about me” page fits the theme of your business.
Are you in the business of making people laugh? Add a bit of humor to your “about me” page. Are you in the business of knowing statistics and mathematical equations? Show off a bit of your talent, by spouting off some of that information in relation to your business. Are you a consultant? Show an objective side by answering tiresome, age-old questions about what you can really do.
Know Its Purpose
What’s the purpose of your “about me” web page? Do you really know? If not, it’s time to get back to the drawing board and figure it out.
A personal website, for instance, isn’t about selling services but about providing entertainment. Use the “about me” page to tell visitors why you’re so open about your personal life, what they’ll get out of visiting your website, and why your website is relevant to their lives.
A blog, for instance, doesn’t have a home page to explain why it exists but it does have an “about me” page. Use the “about me” page to explain why the blog exists along with the all important facts: who, what, when and where.
A homebased business website is often a one-man operation. And no matter how hard you try to disguise that fact behind words like, “we, us, or our” customers and clients will eventually catch on. Don’t deceive them. Instead use your “about me” web page to build the beginning of a relationship with your potential client or customer. Avoid talk about your personal life, your family, and your friends, and focus on why your service or product would be a good fit, despite the reservations your visitors may have based on the fact that you are a homebased business. Talk about how the company got started, how the business evolved, and why your accomplishments are a good fit.
A company website, on the other hand, should have an “about us” web page that is written to show potential clients and customers that with unity comes strength. The “about us” web page may highlight the company’s overall success by mentioning years in business, awards received, etc. It may include a brief paragraph on key employees working within the company—alternating employees over the months. It may talk about how the company got started and where it is headed, and it may explain the company’s diverse role in society. But above all, it stays customer-focused and answers the overall question, “What’s in it for me?”
Make A Connection
Whether you’re a large company with several hundred employees working with you, or a one-man shop, customers and clients like to feel valued. They want to feel as though their business matters to you and your company—even if deep down they understand that they may be just another number or just another paycheck. So go ahead, make your “about me” web page feel warm, welcoming, and inviting. Allow your visitors to feel as though they’re sitting down the CEO of your company, over a nice hot cup of coffee and shooting the breeze. Give them the inside scoop!
