Understanding the pay as you go cellular phone structure.

If you’ve been discouraged by the high costs of prepaid cell phone minutes, there are a few things you should know.

    a. Prepaid cell phone plans were not designed for customers with good credit scores or customers who don’t want to be locked into year-long contracts.

    b. Prepaid cell phone plans were designed for customers with poor credit, no credit, bankruptcies, and those who can’t legally sign contracts, such as teenagers under the age of eighteen.
That being said, it’s easy to understand why prepaid cell phone rates are higher than traditional wireless plans—and no it’s not to stick it to customers who are already down on their luck! In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Prepaid cell phone plans were designed to give consumers—who otherwise couldn't afford cell phones—a chance to own a cell phone at an affordable, and often manageable, per minute rate.

Prepaid cell phone rates are higher than traditional wireless plans, there’s no argument there. But that’s because there are no contract terms to tie customers to the wireless company. And because customers are not locked into contracts for set periods of time, there’s no guarantee they will stay with the prepaid wireless company past their initial prepaid minutes. And that means the wireless company cannot rely on the continued sales of past customers to show a profit—which ultimately means more out-of-pocket expenses marketing to new cell phone users.

But don’t let that bit of information deter you from purchasing a prepaid cell phone. All companies are in it for the money and finding a way to help—err capitalize on consumer weaknesses—is a natural part of doing business!

If you don’t have the credit history to get a better per minute rate and you like the idea of having a cell phone for emergencies or convenience, prepaid cell phone plans are the way to go. In fact, per minute rates are getting better all the time! And with the ability to change wireless carriers at a moments notice, you can easily switch services to the lowest rates available—as they happen!
