Review
Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about heaven? Have you ever questioned what you’d find when you got there? Where have you gone searching for answers: friends, family members, pastors…the Bible?

In What Is Heaven Like?, author Beverly Lewis addresses those questions through the eyes of a young boy—a boy in search of answers, himself. After his grandpa dies, the boy’s grief causes him to wonder what his grandfather does in heaven, what heaven’s really like, will he ever see his grandfather again, and how can he be sure that he, too, will get to heaven one day.

Instead of bottling those questions up inside, the boy sets off in search of answers—asking everyone he meets a different question about heaven. When he tells his mother about his quest, his mother responds, “Honey, remember you can always come to Dad or me with questions, okay? We can look in the Bible for answers, too.” Then she sits down and answers his questions.

In the end, the boy realizes that all his questions have helped him gain a better understanding of heaven while reassuring his grandpa’s promise that they’d one day see each other again.

Each page, within the story, includes a sidebar—a Biblical scripture that matches the content on that page. And every illustration beautifully portrays the thoughts being conveyed. The last page of the book includes a letter to parents—a letter designed to help parents help their children understand heaven.

What I especially loved about this story is the way the author takes a child’s inquisitive mind and lets it play out. The child isn’t stifled, and adults aren’t offering long, drawn-out theological explanations of heaven or death. The story shows parents that while people often have their own opinions about heaven and religion, the Bible is the only place to find truth. And when given the opportunity to seek the truth, children find healing.
