Review
Have you ever felt like your life was just one big balancing act and you just weren’t making it work? Have you ever felt so exhausted
that you didn’t have enough time to give your children the time they deserved with you? I know I have. In fact, there have been times
when my life was so busy and out of whack that I couldn’t even enjoy the little time I did have with my family.
I’d often go to bed feeling guilty for not being the superwoman I envisioned in my head—for not meeting my own expectations of what a
good mother, wife, and human being was. But something happened two weeks ago that changed all that. Both my husband and I received a
revelation from God to change the way we’ve been living. While we couldn’t put into words all that we felt God impressing upon our
hearts, we did know that God wanted us to re-evaluate what our priorities, to make some significant changes, and to remember what was
most important: family and a relationship with Him.
Then today, I picked up a copy of “Here For You: Creating A Mother-Daughter Bond that Lasts A Lifetime” and read, “…but the key is to
look for ways to lighten your emotional and physical load so you can enjoy these crazy teenage years to their fullest. Not only will
you reap the benefits, but so will your entire family.” How true that is!
In just a few short weeks, I’ve already seen a drastic improvement in how I view things, in my relationship with my husband, and our
relationship with our children. I can’t tell you how refreshing and rewarding it is to stop chasing life and to actually live the life
God has called us to live—to have our priorities set correctly. I know it won’t be easy to keep our priorities in order, not with the
chaos we call life, but having a renewed sense of peace and calm, I can assure you that we will be working towards that goal. And among
those priorities is developing, stronger, healthier relationships with our children. That’s why “Here For You”, was on my reading list
today.
In this book, you’ll discover how to deal with your pre-teen daughter, the tween. You’ll discover:
- Why making time for yourself is vital to a healthy relationship with your tweens.
- Why what you model—in actions and words—is important to the growth of your tween.
- Why it’s important to be open and honest with your tween and not beat around the bush; especially when it comes to life altering questions and moments.
- How to help your tween become independent over time, so that she can learn responsibility and handle new experiences in a healthy, safe manner.
- Why it’s important to choose your battles and to choose them carefully.
- How to stop self-destructive behaviors before they start and how to deal with them, when they do.
- What sacred covenants really are and why they’re made.
- How to make a covenant with your daughter and why it should be based on open, honest communication that goes both ways.
- Steps to keeping your covenant with each other, even when life gets tough.
- Why it’s better to parent your tween with intentional thought and care then to parent on the fly, hoping everything works out and your actions and/or words don’t cause great harm to your tween.
- Why we must parent first and become friends later and how that involves taking on the responsibility to shape, discipline, and direct our tweens.
- How an honest walk with God can not only change your tween’s perspective on life, but build a stronger, more powerful relationship between the two of you.
- How to appropriately show your love to each other in a way you both understand.
There is a lot of food for thought in this book, and the sidebars where tweens share what they love about their moms is refreshing and insightful. But it was the true stories shared by missionary girls—girls who came from slightly broken homes—that really touched my heart. Reading their hurt and pain and their desire for something more only made me want to reach out to my daughter that much more.
