Review
I know it sounds wrong—on so many levels—but there are days when I just need a good escape and a soap opera can do that for me;
especially General Hospital. The storylines are farfetched, the sets are unrealistic, and sometimes the characters do something so
against my moral compass that I have to stop and ask myself, “Why on earth am I watching this crap?” And then it dawns on me. I just
needed a break from reality, I needed someone else’s life to look worse than my own, and I needed to be reminded of what’s real and how
things don’t always look better on the other side of the grass.
So when I got a chance to read Tracey Bateman’s novel, Catch A Rising Star, I had to wonder, How is she going to be able to pull
off writing about a soap opera for a bunch of Christians—Christians who read Christian chicklits to escape the smut of other romance
novels?
But pull it off she did! I was so engrossed in the novel that I could literally feel the characters come alive before my very eyes.
And the best part is that the book wasn’t preachy and it didn’t make fun of the world of soap stars. Instead, it embraced the soap
scene and reminded everyone everywhere that we can be a light in even the darkest of circumstances; all we have to do is remember to
stay strong, have compassion, and trust God.
It’s not all serious either. There are several instances where I just couldn’t help but bust out laughing. It’s a book you won’t be
able to put down. And it is definitely a keeper for your private collection.
Plot
Tabitha Brockman, or Tabby as she likes to be called, is a "has been" soap opera star enduring one of the most humiliating jobs of her
life—a costumed storyteller for her local bookstore. There’s only one problem: she hates (with a capital H) kids. Soon she finds herself
unemployed and longing for the days when she was on top of the world as a soap opera star.
Turns out Tabby was let go because the soap’s writer didn’t believe her husband was the one doing all the flirty with Tabby and
misleading her—making her believe that he was single. And her anger cost Tabby her agent, her career, and her future as an actress.
Talk about blacklisting!
And if that wasn’t bad enough Tabby’s mom keeps trying to hook her up with a guy she doesn’t love, let alone like. In fact, she kind of
detests him. But he’s bound and determined to win her heart; even if it is borderline stalking.
But things are about to change for the better because ratings are going down on Legacy of Life, the soap she was fired from and the
public wants Tabby’s character back. There’s only one catch: Tabby must spend her acting days with five year old twins! You see, when
she was killed off the show she had give birth to twins. Now, her twins are five years old and need their mother. And you guessed it.
Tabby is having a difficult time adjusting to the role of motherhood.
To help her get into her role, she agrees to start hanging out with the twins and that’s when things really heat up. Tabby falls head
over hills for their single, widowed dad and discovers a jealousy streak that prevents her from reaching out. Will she finally find true
love? Will she learn to love his children or will she only be able to tolerate them? And what about that guy that keeps hanging around?
Will he finally get the message and leave her alone? I’d love to tell you but then I’d ruin a rather juicy plot and I just can’t do that!
Lesson Learned
Catch A Rising Star is filled with real-life issues that affect many Christians worldwide, regardless of whether they play a soap
actress or not. The near miscarriage of her sister’s baby, the near loss of her dad’s life, the emergency surgery to remove her
appendix, the overcritical mother, the job loss, the career humiliation, the jealousy and bitterness towards an archenemy, and a love
that can’t seem to get off ground floor.
But despite all the ups and downs in Tabby’s life, one thing is certain: with God all things are possible. You’ve just got to trust Him
enough to let Him lead the way—even if it’s not on “your” time table.
Whether you’re a new actress looking for an inside glimpse into the world of acting or a Christian struggling with recent hurts, Catch A
Rising Star is sure to give you a glimpse at both worlds. No matter what obstacles you are facing in life, I encourage you to remember
one important lesson—you are never truly alone as long as you have family, friends, and a God who loves you.
