Wish I'd Known You Tears Ago

Author
Stephen Bly

Review
While I’ve known of Stephen Bly and his wife, Janet, for years (we belong to the same online writing group), I never picked up one of Stephen’s books until last month, when I read Wish I’d Known You Tears Ago.

Most of the book is written using fast-paced, engaging dialogue that often transforms the reader into another world. There are several smaller plots that all seem to intertwine around the main character, but don’t worry Bly does such a great job that everything blends together beautifully.

Wish I’d Known You Tears Ago is the third book in the Horse Dreams trilogy and should be read after reading the first two books. That being said, if you don’t mind doing a little detective work to get up to speed, the book can be read as a stand-alone book—as I did. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

The Plot:
Develyn Worrell returns to Argenta, Wyoming in search of the person she lost years ago—herself. As she searches her soul for answers, she rediscovers the little girl who left Argenta, friendships blossom, and a cowboy steals her heart.

Once she feels confident in whom she is, Develyn calls for her college-aged daughter, Delaney. The two had a falling out and it’s Develyn’s hope that she and her daughter will be able to put the past behind them, mend old wounds, and build a much stronger, healthier relationship.

Once Develyn’s daughter arrives, the once peaceful town of Argenta hits a few snags: lightning destroys the cabin she’s staying in, the relationship with her daughter has gotten worse instead of better, an old friend suffers a heart attack, the boy her daughter’s fallen head over hills with seems too good to be true, her roommate gets engaged, and a dear friend, back in Indiana, won’t accept a marriage proposal until Develyn meets the gent. And if that isn’t enough to rock Develyn’s world, she can’t choose between Indiana or Wyoming, focusing on her daughter or embracing new love, being true to herself or doing what she believes is right.

What will Develyn do? Will her world ever find the peace she desperately longs for?

A Lesson Learned
Wish I’d Known You Tears Ago—a novel is breathtakingly refreshing.

Many times throughout life, we feel trapped and confused, but instead of slowing down long enough to figure out what’s wrong in our lives, we simply continue to move forward—hoping that things will work themselves out and that longing for something better will simply disappear as fast as it appeared. But life doesn’t work that way, as Develyn soon discovered.

When life knocks us down, we have a choice to make. We can choose to allow life to keep us down, or we can get up, dust ourselves off, and fight back. If we’re too weak to fight on our own, we again have a choice to make. When Develyn’s world became too much to handle, she made a choice to take care of herself. Then she took action.

First, she called upon God to give her strength and insight.

Second, she left the place that was clouding her judgment—if only for a time.

Third, she took time out from her already hectic life to breathe, to think, and to find renewed strength.

Fourth, she learned to let down her guard long enough to trust someone to help her.

And fifth, when she finally got to a place she felt secure enough to stand alone, she tackled the past, found joy in the present, and discovered a future full of hope.

Whether your struggling with decisions you’ve made in the past, are weary of the life you live, or simply want a good book to read, you can’t go wrong with the Horse Dreams trilogy—especially not with Wish I’d Known You Tears Ago.

As you begin to work through your own personal demons, I encourage you to remember the importance of taking time out for yourself; to relax, to reflect, to dream. If you can only get away for a weekend or an evening, do it. Do it for your marriage, do it for your children, but most importantly, do it for yourself. Life will still be waiting when you return, but I promise the time away will help clear your mind and offer a renewed sense of purpose.
