Movie Title
Hip Hop For Kids Pop Lock and Break, 2004

Staring
Roger G, GG, Poker, Ms. Twist, various children

Content
Children learn the importance of stretching, warming up the body, and counting before learning the basic moves of popping, locking, and breaking. Then once the moves are down, children learn how to put them together with additional moves like the Chingy, the Uprock, and the Ponytail. The video then teaches the kids to freestyle and ends with performances by hip-hop pros. There’s even a bonus section that discusses healthy eating tips!

Overview
When I was a little girl, my friend and I would take an old cardboard box, flatten it, and try to pop, lock, spin, and break dance. It was so hilarious because we didn’t know what we were doing, and we were too embarrassed to ask the kids in the neighborhood who did know what they were doing. This video would’ve come in handy!

Today, I have an 11-year-old daughter who loves to dance and loves to pretend she can break dance, so when I received a copy of this video to review I was excited and leery at the same time. There aren’t many dance/instructional videos that could hold the interest of an adult, much less a child…and I didn’t think this would be one that would.

At first, she was disappointed. She said, “All they’re doing is stretching and exercising. This isn’t learning how to dance!”

I told her to listen to the gentleman speaking; he said “It’s important to warm up so that you don’t get hurt.” She reluctantly began the stretching and warm up routine.

Once the dance steps came into play, all I heard was, “Cool! This is so cool! Wow! This is fun! I am really going to learn to dance now. I like this!”

When the video ended she said, “That’s it? It’s so short!”

To which I replied, “It’s an hour long. It’s just that you had so much fun with it the time flew by. Put it in again.”

“I guess this is one video that won’t make it to the public library,” I thought. (You see I donate my review copies to help our small community library…we can always rent them later.)

The Review
Some may argue that the dance moves, the lyrics, and the music are “old school”…meaning that resemble the 80’s or early. But the truth is that good things never go out of date. And the fact is that there are many children today who don’t know the moves and need someone to teach them to do them properly.

And finally, the thing I liked most about Hip Hop For Kids, Pop! Lock! And Break! is that the DVD and accompanying music CD are truly packed with energy. And energy means our children are getting physically fit without even realizing they’re doing it!

If you’re tired of seeing your child sitting on the couch watching television or playing video games, order a copy for your kids.
