Iron Man

Plot
Billionaire Tony Stark heads the worlds leading manufacturer of weapons. On what should have been a routine demonstration of his latest weaponry, Stark and his team of military guards are hit by a group of terrorists. Stark is captured and forced recreate his latest weapon.

Review
Tony Stark’s father dies while he’s a young boy. The legendary weapons company his father built is left to Stark, but he’s unable to run the corporation until he’s of legal age, leaving his father’s best friend, Obadiah Stane, in charge. Once of legal age, Stark takes over the company, leaving Obadiah in the role of head honcho.

Stark, like his father before him, is a brilliant man with an IQ that goes beyond reasoning, but he’s also a sarcastic jokester, a womanizer, an alcoholic, and a work-a-holic with very few friends. Yet, there’s something about Stark’s character that draws you to him. You can’t help but want to get to know him better, to see what’s underneath that facade he seems to be masquerading behind.

But just as quickly as that thought pops into your mind, you’re taken to a scene that causes you to rethink that thought. That is, until his convoy is attacked during a routine missile demonstration. After showing the United States military his latest invention—The Jericho, he’s attacked by terrorists who kill and wound many U.S. soldiers in an attempt to kidnap Stark.

Once captured, Stark is taken to a hideaway where another capture by the name of Yinsen is forced to save Stark’s life. Stark wakes to find a circular magnet device deep within the cavity of his chest, attached to a large car battery.

The two captures become quick friends and devise a plan of escape. Stark agrees to build a Jericho missile from scratch, but instead uses the materials to secretly work on his latest invention—the Iron Man suit. Though very rugged, the suit does it’s job and Stark escapes with his life. Sadly, Yinsen does not make it.

Iron Man

Once back in the United States, Stark discovers that his weapons of destruction aren’t just saving American lives, but they’re being used by our enemies to destroy lives. No longer able to live with that realization, he decides to perfect his Iron Man suit and use it to rid the world of evil doers, one enemy at a time—starting with his own comrade in arms, Obadiah.

Within the main story, there are a few subtle storylines that leave much room for interpretation but do not distract from the overall plot. You could even go so far as to say they add a little mystery to the film.

Honestly, it was an amazing film. One of the best comics turned live-action films I’ve seen to date. The dialogue was quick and witty. The action was right on target and not drawn out (well, maybe a little towards the end). The storyline was deep and conflicted—even with so few words. And the set perfectly captured every aspect of the film.

But one can’t help but leave the film wondering a few things, like what made Obadiah turn on Stark and leave him for dead. If he was truly like a father-figure to Stark, would money really turn him? And Pepper Potts, Stark’s personal assistant, was she in love with the guy or did she just love him like a brother because I couldn’t tell and deep down, I was secretly rooting for the two to get together. Then there’s Jim, Rhodes, Stark’s military liaison and personal friend, was he simply used to Stark’s dry sense of humor or did he know something the rest of us didn’t know that kept him coming back for more verbal and emotional abuse? And of course there are Stark’s artificial intelligent beings, Jarvis the main computer, and his lab assistant. Why was Stark able to connect more with them, than with the humans?
