Review
iCarly is about a young girl named Carly who lives with her somewhat childish, twenty-something brother, Spencer, who’s trying
desperately to make a name for himself as an artist. Their parents live abroad—on military duty—leaving Spencer in charge. Carly spends
most of her time with her best friends Sam and Freddie. Together, the three of them create a weekly web cast where anything goes. But
iCarly isn’t just about the web cast; it’s also about life as pre-teens: friendships, dating, school, and of course, growing up with an
eccentric brother.
It’s a show about kids for kids and it’s truly funny.
iCarly isn’t your traditional comedy. Not only does it focus on make-believe characters that host a weekly Internet web cast, but
there’s a real live website (http://icarly.com) in which ordinary, everyday kids can upload their own home videos, answer polls, play
online games, and text the stars.
I’ll admit that when I first watched the series, I didn’t realize that the website mentioned in the show was real. But having heard the
web address mentioned more times than necessary, I logged online to find out. Personally, I like the idea of tying the televised show
with its sister website, but I think that each episode should also include a caveat about seeking parental permission before going
online and definitely before uploading videos or sharing personal information.
In this particular DVD you get 2 discs with 13 episodes: iPilot, iWant More Viewers, iHatch Chicks, iDream of Dance, iLike Jake, iWanna
Stay with Spencer, iNevel, iScream on Halloween, iSpay a Mean Teacher, iWant to Date Freddie, iWant a World Record, iRue the Day, and
iPromise Not to Tell.
Your Task
Take time out of your busy schedule to sit back, relax, and watch a humorous episode of iCarly. Then talk to your kids about the
importance of Internet safety. Explain to them the necessity to keep certain bits of information private, including when you will and
won’t be home, how you walk to and from school each day, and your home address. Talk to them about dealing with cyber bullies, why they
shouldn’t gossip about others, and how important it is that they stay safe and legal by avoiding certain websites.
