cranking, beer-drinking, loud-mouthed, and often rude mother of three adult children; one of which has moved in with Mrs. Harper and her
rent-paying sister, Fran.
Starring
Vicki Lawrence, Ken Berry, Betty White, Karin Argoud, Harvey Korman, Carol Burnett, and more.
Review
While the DVD version could use a little more bells and whistles, the sitcom itself is very funny and lives up to the original series.
The costumes, the set design, and the acting all remind me of a series of comical skits (performed in a local theatre) designed to focus
on the cast and their punch lines, and not the set or special effects.
Not a big fan of sarcasm and crude remarks, I was surprised when I first watched the sitcom, as reruns, to find myself giggling through
every episode. Today is no exception. While I wouldn’t be caught dead mimicking Mrs. Harper’s outlandish remarks, it’s refreshing to
watch a woman be true to herself and not conform to the views of others.
If the show had one defining moment, it would simply be this: no matter how dysfunctional our family is or how bad things appear, we can
get through anything if we simply stick together as family. And as a viewer, it would be: don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself; lighten
up and enjoy life!
Your Task
Watch an episode of Mama’s Family, then gather around the living room to discuss how things could’ve been handled more appropriately.
For instance…
In The Wedding, part 1, there’s way too much drinking going on. This would be the perfect time to discuss, with your children, your
rules on drinking, the law’s rules on drinking, what constitutes too much drinking, and so forth. It would also be a good time to
discuss the fact that although television and peers make drinking appear fun, there are dire consequences to heavy drinking.
In Mama’s Silver, Vince pawns his Mama’s sterling silver without permission. This would be a great time to discuss property rights and
the need to ask permission to borrow, keep, or sell something that doesn’t belong to you.
