These questions will help me write an introduction to the interview:
- How long have you been a musician?
- What type of music do you write (or perform)?
- How did you meet the other members in your band? (Skip if solo)
- What would your biography say? (May just use this as the intro if you provide a 2-3 sentence bio).
These questions are for the actual interview:
If you simply give me a one- or two- line answer for every question, I will not be able to use your interview. Readers want to feel your passion for your career choice and your book, so let it shine.
- When did you realize you wanted to be a professional musician? (Can you give us a visual of that moment? What were you doing? What were you watching or listening to? What really caught your attention about music?)
- How long was it from the time you decided to be a professional musician to the time you got your first paid gig as a musician? (Can you tell us what the gig was… What song you wrote or played… Where you played… How you felt... etc.)
- What was the most difficult aspect of getting started as a paid musician? (And how did you overcome that?)
- How did you get started recording music (or start playing in a band) professionally? (If you have not recorded your first album yet, skip.)
- What is your biggest obstacle when it comes to pitching yourself as a musician and what steps have you taken to overcome that obstacle?
- Can you tell us a little bit about your latest album (or tour)?
- If someone were listening to you for the first time, what song, on your album, would you recommend they listen to? (Why?)
- What are you hoping to accomplish with this album (or tour)?
- How do you balance your life as a musician with your duties as a parent or spouse? (Please feel free to share any personal lessons that go along with your tips; especially if you are on the road a lot.)
- What was the best writing-related advice you ever received when it comes to writing lyrics (or music)? (Please tell us why you feel this way? How has it helped you, etc?)
- What influences the type of music you write (or play)?
- What do you feel is the single most detrimental thing a musician could do to destroy his/her career?
- What do you think music offers to the world, as a whole?
- What’s ahead for your music?
- Feel free to add an extra question or two if you feel it will help promote your music better. Just remember to keep it educational, and less of a sales pitch. I'm all for self-promotion, but if your answers are too self-serving, I won't be able to publish them.
Interviews may appear on the DM Speaks blog, or on the blog and The Dabbling Mum's magazine.
Sometimes Alyice Edrich, our editor, will pull a few quotes from your interview to use in a round-up type article on a specific subject, and whenever possible, she'll pull a quote from your interview to use in other articles.
Occasionally she may allow reprints of your interview to well-established and/or respected publications to give you more exposure for your craft and your album.
