Creative Writing Prompts
All materials copyrighted

Writers use writing prompts to improve their writing skills and break writers’ block. Writing prompts are often used to:

Help new writers…

  • Learn to write about the world around them,
  • Build confidence in their writing abilities,
  • Discover their own writing voices,
  • Get into the habit of writing on demand, and
  • Show more and tell less.
Help veteran writers…
  • Stretch beyond their comfort zones,
  • Transition to a new writing genre,
  • Write more concisely, and
  • Use their imaginations more.
In fact, writing prompts have been known stimulate a writer’s brain, turn boring writers into creative geniuses, and help superficial writers discover the inner depths of their souls.

While most writing prompts are simple exercises designed to help writers get in the mood to write, writing prompts can sometimes take on lives of their own and become more than jumping off points for articles or books.

Writing prompts can be timed or geared towards a certain audience or genre, but they should never be written with fear of using proper grammar, spelling, or other writing rules. The idea is to let your creative juices flow without inhibition—you can always go back and correct later!

Once you've used one of our writing prompts to practice the art and craft of writing, take it a step further and find a market for your piece!
